As an Agile Coach at Suncor, you will guide teams and leadership to motivate, organize, and operate without direct oversight authority. As an Agile Coach, you support teams and leaders in their continually developing their agile maturity through hands-on participation, feedback loops, facilitation, and a coach approach of thought-provoking questions. You will support the development of self-organizing teams that will be able to demonstrate an agile mindset that will manifest through agile practices and techniques given different project contexts. A successful outcome will be a psychologically safe team focused on value creation for their customer while continually improving themselves, organizational processes, and the end-product. You will directly support the organization’s digital transformation (known as Suncor 4.0). This role requires seamless navigation in a large, matrixed organization spanning different technical and business domains.

You will use your expertise to:

  • Lead, develop, champion, and drive the cultural adoption of agile-based mindset support by delivery practices across the Suncor Digital departments, including direct participation and leadership in organizational change management activities
  • Develop agile capabilities and increased maturity of agile values, principles, and behaviors to various supporting organizations, including delivery partners and vendor organizations
  • Develop coaching agreements with teams, individuals, and leaders to support measurable achievements
  • Support the development of Agile ways of working within Suncor
  • Help teams develop and execute the entire agile project, including release planning, funding strategy, milestones, deliverables, releases, and interdependencies to manage successful outcomes
  • Adopt appropriate coaching stances (context appropriate) to inspire individuals and teams to perform at a higher level
  • Influence behaviors of leaders at all levels and without traditional hierarchy
  • Recruit, develop, and mentor scrum masters as required
  • Develop and mentor product owners as required
  • Lead, execute and coach the various agile ceremonies, work methods, and practices to project teams, including refinement, planning, retrospectives, estimation, and team forming and development
  • Ensure primary agile roles are staffed appropriately, responsibilities understood, on-boarded into the project in a timely fashion, and suitably performing to meet project needs and objectives
  • Lead escalations along with recommended approaches to leadership on an as-needed basis
  • Support enterprise agile adoption and the Agile Center of Excellence by defining agile delivery norms, maturing our product model adoption, assisting in identifying agile improvement opportunities, and Suncor’s agile capability development

Must-haves (minimum requirements):

  • Five years of prior leadership experience
  • Five years of agile delivery experience with delivery into enterprise organization
  • Five years of previous project/program management experience, including using traditional/predictive delivery approaches
  • Three years Agile coaching experience working with multiple teams and leadership
  • Prior work experience working within large matrix-based organizations
  • Strong relationship management skills including internal customers, vendors, and within the team
  • Experience with and understanding the value of agile tools supporting Backlog management (specifically JIRA and Confluence), Continuous Integration, automated testing, etc.
  • Practical, preferred mastery, of enterprise scaling frameworks such as Disciplined Agile Delivery, Lean Kanban, or Scaled Agile Framework for enterprises (SAFe)
  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in finance, computer science, management, or related field
  • Demonstrable capability of agile framework such as Scrum, Kanban, or XP
  • Demonstrable capability in agile work practices
  • Demonstrable capability of coaching, facilitating, and developing other individuals
  • Knowledge of IT governance processes, standards, and procedures
  • Alignment with our values: safety above all else, stronger together, operational discipline, curiosity and lifelong learning, and act with integrity

Preference for:

  • Agile Certifications, such as: Certified Scrum Master / Professional Scrum Master, PMI-ACP, Certified Scrum Product Owner /Professional Scrum Product Owner, or Kanban Certified Practitioner designation
  • Coaching Certifications, such as: Kanban Consultant, er, Scrum Master Certified Enterprise Coach, and/or Certified Team Coach designation
  • Project Management designations such as PMP or PgMP

Where you’ll be working, your work schedule, and other important information:

  • You will work out of our Calgary head office, located in the Suncor Energy Centre at 150 – 6th Ave SW
  • Hours of work are a regular 40-hour work week, Monday to Friday
