Job Description:

Sun Life is embarking on a multi-year transformation to a Digital Enterprise. We are moving to a new way of working, bringing Business, Digital Technology and Operations closer together in delivering Client value.  As an Agile Coach in Sun Life's Digital Solutions (DS) IT organization, the incumbent is required to be an experienced scrum master practitioner with a demonstrated understanding of Scrum and a high-level understanding of other agile frameworks and practices.  Working with agile teams, sponsors, and stakeholders, the team coach will help increase agile maturity towards delivering on commitments to achieve business value, build high-performing teams, and be a catalyst for change.  The team coach is responsible for helping teams perform by instilling an agile mindset and methodology through coaching individuals and championing continuous improvement. They have a deep understanding of the organization and team processes and add value with a broader perspective across multiple teams and business units.

What Will You Do?

  • Act as an Agile champion for Digital Enterprise and teams in Canada.
  • Help stand up new Agile teams and provide consulting and coaching to these teams to support their development and ongoing improvement to become self-organizing, self-managing and highly functional. This includes supporting the development of the Product Owner, Scrum Master and the team members.
  • Act as a change agent, you are passionate about agile, motivating change, and making it happen, championing a culture of continuous improvement and valued delivery to our clients. 
  • Facilitate an environment of continuous improvement and adoption of agile/scrum practices.
  • Provide coaching on how to prioritize and manage items in the backlog and maintain a backlog 3 to 4 sprints ahead of the team
  • Promote the Agile culture and mindset throughout the organization. This includes leading teams and influencing leaders and partners as they learn and adopt Agile practices by supporting them through coaching, mentoring, facilitating and teaching.
  • Promote the use of DevOps technical practices and tools.
  • Coordinate with other teams, facilitate preparation for Product Increment Planning, and support the Agile Release Train estimates for larger features and capabilities.
  • Provide the educational support to the organization on Agile principles and Scrum/ Kanban practices or any additional Agile techniques to increase the Company-wide execution, innovation and overall maturity.

What Do You Need to Succeed?

  • 3 years experience as a Scrum Master of multiple teams
  • Good understanding of Sun Life's Digital Enterprise Journey
  • 1 year of mentoring other scrum masters / coach-in-training
  • A test and learn attitude, a bias for action, a passion to innovate and a willingness to learn.
  • Expert facilitator with mentoring, training, and teaching experience
  • Influencing skills in one on one scenarios and within a group. Uses emotional intelligence and humility to understand what motivates people to act.
  • Collaborator in cross-functional teams on technology, design, business, and operations
  • Understanding of the difference between consulting and coaching and knowing when to apply each
  • Commitment to grow as an Agile Coach through continually improving your own skills and approaches
  • Proven ability to deliver significant improvements in self-managed Agile teams through application of coaching techniques
  • Nice to Have:  Agile Certifications – SAFe, PMI-ACP, PSM ,CSM, CSPO or other Agile certification

The Base Pay range is for the primary location for which the job is posted.  It may vary depending on the work location of the successful candidate or other factors.  In addition to Base Pay, eligible Sun Life employees participate in various incentive plans, payment under which is discretionary and subject to individual and company performance.  Certain sales focused roles have sales incentive plans based on individual or group sales results.
