The Standards Council of Canada (SCC) is seeking to hire assessors in medical laboratory testing in several fields on a contractual basis:

• microbiology/molecular biology
• hematology
• immunology
• pathology
• point of care testing (POCT)

Assessors play a key role in the assessment and accreditation of laboratories. They apply their extensive technical expertise to evaluate the competence of personnel, and the conformity of processes. They conduct file reviews, interviews with laboratory personnel and witness audits to support accreditation assessments.


Key Activities

• Work closely with SCC staff to determine the scope and criteria to be assessed
• Conduct interviews, as part of a team or independently, to assess the competence of personnel
• Review laboratory records to assess evidence of conformity with relevant criteria
• Observe the work of laboratory personnel to assess their conformity to procedures and application of relevant criteria
• Report findings to the Lead Assessor and provide recommendations based on evidence

Essential Qualifications

• Medical laboratory technologist diploma or bachelor’s degree in medical laboratory science, biomedical science, biochemistry or equivalent
• Canadian Citizen/Permanent Resident/Work VISA for the duration of the contract

Language Requirements

• Various: bilingual imperative, French imperative, English imperative

• Strong technical, analytical and review skills

• Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written
• Strong organizational and prioritization skills
• Strong interpersonal skills, both within an assessment team, and with customers
• Advanced computer skills, including Microsoft Office applications, and web-based communications

Abilities

• Work independently or with limited supervision
• Effectively represent SCC and follow SCC’s policies and procedures
• Meet tight deadlines and work under pressure
• Willingness to travel within Canada and the United States, occasionally on short notice
• Work in a variety of laboratory environments

Core Technical Knowledge and Competencies

• Familiarity with the standard: ISO 15189:2012 Medical Laboratories – Requirements for Quality and Competence
• Familiarity with associated technical standards

Field-specific Technical Knowledge and Competencies


To be considered for the role in a specific field, the candidate must demonstrate that they meet all the core competencies listed above, as well as the competencies for the specific field


Clinical Chemistry

• At least 5 years of experience in the field of clinical chemistry
• Thorough knowledge of the principles, techniques, procedures, instrumentation and safety precautions in the field of laboratory medicine particularly as they apply in the field of clinical chemistry
• Familiarity with the operation, calibration, troubleshooting and routine maintenance of modern laboratory equipment and instrumentation, including automated equipment

Microbiology/Molecular Biology

• At least 5 years of experience in the field of clinical microbiology/molecular biology
• Thorough knowledge of the principles, techniques, procedures, instrumentation and safety precautions in the field of clinical microbiology/molecular biology
• Familiarity with the operation, calibration, troubleshooting and routine maintenance of modern laboratory equipment and instrumentation, including automated equipment and specialized equipment such as thermocyclers and chromatograms

Hematology

• At least 5 years of experience in the field of hematology
• Thorough knowledge of the principles, techniques, procedures, instrumentation and safety precautions in the field of hematology
• Familiarity with the operation, calibration, troubleshooting and routine maintenance of modern laboratory equipment and instrumentation, including automated equipment

Immunology

• At least 5 years of experience in the field of immunology
• Technical experience in immunoassays such as ELISA and protein quantification assays, cell-culture and flow cytometry
• Thorough knowledge of the principles, techniques, procedures, instrumentation and safety precautions in the field of immunology
• Familiarity with the operation, calibration, troubleshooting and routine maintenance of modern laboratory equipment and instrumentation, including automated equipment

Pathology

• At least 5 years of experience in the field of pathology
• Thorough knowledge of the principles, techniques, procedures, instrumentation and safety precautions in the field of pathology
• Familiarity with the operation, calibration, troubleshooting and routine maintenance of modern laboratory equipment and instrumentation, including automated equipment

Point of Care Testing

• Familiarity with the standard: ISO 22870: 2016 Point-of-care testing (POCT) — Requirements for quality and competence
• Thorough knowledge of the principles, techniques, procedures, instrumentation and safety precautions with point of care testing
• Familiarity with the operation, calibration, troubleshooting and routine maintenance of modern laboratory equipment and instrumentation, including automated equipment
