Position Summary...

The Design Project Manager role will support Walmart Canada’s Design Team as the Design gatekeeper for all format and special projects outside of major capital project program requiring design development, including but not limited to merchant, operations, Omni, FM and Licensee initiatives.

Responsible to engage with multiple business units to interpret and develop design requirements, build and develop concepts, establish and influence Design and Construction delivery budgets and high-level schedules for use by key stakeholders from concept through capex approval.

Provide business units with creative design solutions focused on solid design principles, cost reduction, speed of execution, ease to replicate across multiple jurisdictions, for new initiatives as required while ensuring requests are aligned with design standards.

What you'll do...

1. Key point person for Program Management team and SBU Project Managers for design development of format and special projects with a particular focus on initiatives requiring new design development, but inclusive of all pre-approval format projects.  Engaging with multiple teams and aligning multiple stakeholders to identify opportunities.
2. Gather and coordinate design requirements with all cross functional stakeholders including merchants, operations, Omni, FM, LP, ISD, Marketing, Fixtures and others as required as part of design development.  Document decisions made throughout design development process.  Actively participate in project status meetings and scope and budget reviews.  Store visits may be required as part of the design development.
3. Develop design drawings/sketches for internal use to document business requirements, ensuring all designs are code compliant and capture technical building requirements. Responsible to consider all store sizes and formats as part of design development.  Align details with prototype standards and various templates.  Resolve unique store requirements as needed and influencing business partners on specific design impacts and requirements.
4. Develop design timelines specific to each initiative including permit timelines based on jurisdictional requirements.
5. Communicate design requirements for format and special projects to Design Execution team to be executed as part of major capital project, as a special project or as part of a bundle.  Support Design Execution team as required.
6. Develop project cost estimates in conjunction with construction estimating team.
7. Engage and contract with external consulting teams to develop design drawings as required to facilitate final budgeting and program delivery.  Collaborate with Prototype and Standards for inclusion of new design initiatives into prototype and template documents.
8. Maintain and monitor special project inputs in Walmart Central Data Repository (Tririga) from concept development to capex approval stage. 

Qualifications:

• 5-7 years of experience in Space planning and retail design experience
• Architectural Design or Civil Engineering education
• Project Management Experience (PMP an asset)
• Knowledge of construction industry principles and building technologies
• Ability to read and interpret construction drawings and specifications
• Familiar with building code requirements
• Space planning and retail design experience
• Proficient in Revit, AutoCAD, MS Office including MS Project
• Retail operations and/or merchandising experience an asset
• Ability to work with cross-functional teams to gather relevant information and integrate findings into physical store space design.
• Ability to influence and advise business on industry best practices.
• Manage multiple projects at a given time
