This Financial Analyst - Summer Student position will support the Financial Reporting Team within the Media Controller’s Group. Reporting to the Manager of Sports and Investments, the successful candidate will leverage strong technical accounting and communication skills to ensure the accuracy and timeliness of financial reporting, and for effective and efficient processes and internal controls around their preparation and approval. The successful candidate will also be responsible for the consolidation of Media results (including Sports – Sportsnet and Toronto Blue Jays, Television, Radio, Today’s Shopping Choice, Digital), operating expenses for the Sportsnet portfolio and assist with various ad hoc special projects.

 

What you'll be doing:

  • Prepare monthly consolidation and Sportsnet journal entries and any other special journal entries as required.
  • Prepare and analyze Media’s Statement of Cash Flows and intercompany transactions on a monthly basis.
  • Analyze Media Corporate and Sportsnet financial accounts on a monthly basis and prepare corresponding balance sheet reconciliations.
  • Assist with the compilation and analysis of the monthly and quarterly divisional financial reports to Corporate and Media management.
  • Perform divisional variance analysis on balance sheet and income statement on a monthly basis.
  • Assist the external auditors with their quarterly reviews as necessary.
  • Work with Corporate Finance to ensure all information is provided for quarter-ends as required. For example, validating and reviewing MD&A financial information for completeness and accuracy and preparing various account continuities for external reporting.
  • Maintain, review and submit requests for Media’s Standard Chart of Accounts
  • Assist with the maintenance of appropriate financial reporting controls for Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX).
  • Help ensure appropriate financial and accounting policies and procedures are being followed by all divisional companies.
  • Assess/research the appropriate accounting treatment for various unusual and/or complex transactions and determine the impact on the financial statements in accordance with IFRS.
  • Assist tax department in responding to government tax auditor requests and queries.
  • Liaise with Tax, Corporate Development, Legal, and Regulatory to ensure acquisitions & divestitures / other transactions are accounted for accurately and on a timely basis.
  • Ad hoc projects or special analysis as required.

 

What you have:

  • University or College student, currently pursuing an undergraduate degree in Business, preferably in an Accounting stream.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong computer skills (experience with Excel and Outlook an asset).
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills.
  • Organized with strong attention to detail.
  • Driven, customer focused and results oriented individual.
  • Ability to independently manage and organize multiple work activities in order to meet or exceed established deadlines and priorities.
  • Knowledge or interest in Sports is an asset
