The Facility Services Department supports McMaster University’s goal of advancing human and societal wellbeing, and the “Forward With Integrity” overriding vision of ‘educating for capability’, by physically preserving and enhancing the campus and its buildings.The Department is comprised of several operational divisions, which includes: Custodial Services, Maintenance Services, Design and Construction, Logistics and Grounds, Parking and Security, Engineering Operations, and Utilities and Energy Management. Facility Services is also supported by an internal Business Services unit.

Job Summary
 
The Fire Technician is responsible for the inspection, maintenance and testing of fire detection devices, signal appliances, control equipment, panels, and ancillary devices controlled by the fire safety system. The Fire Technician will also work on associated life safety and fire suppression systems within the campus facilities and buildings.
 
 
 
Representative Accountabilities
 
Primary Accountabilities Perform duties of a registered Canadian Fire Alarm Technician in Ontario. Set-up, inspect and evaluate fire detection, signal devices, control equipment and ancillary equipment and systems to ensure compliance with fire and building codes. Identify corrective or take corrective actions in order to bring systems into compliance with codes. Conduct inspection of fire safety systems and recommends or takes corrective action to ensure compliance with codes, regulations and standards. Provide technical support by working on low voltage field wiring circuits, the connection of field devices, the microprocessor systems using addressable devices and remote communication. Provide technical support in evaluation new methods and equipment for improving and upgrading property protection features. Work on fire hose cabinet hoses, fire extinguisher inspections and maintenance, and replace spent units when necessary  Create and maintain records and appropriate documentation to support inspection and maintenance status of all related fire detection or fire suppression equipment on campus.
 
 
 
General Accountabilities Operate within established security and safety regulations. Remain knowledgeable and current with job requirements through participation in courses, instructional seminars and trade shows as required and/or sponsored by the University. Communicate with fellow workers, faculty, students, staff and visitors in an appropriate and effective manner. In a position of trust, perform job assignments in an efficient and effective manner.
 
 
 
Qualifications Education:
 
Grade 12 Diploma or equivalent.
 
Must be a registered Fire Alarm Technician in good standing with the Canadian Fire Alarm Association.
 
Experience:
 
3 years of related experience.
 
 
 
Effort   Required to lift and carry equipment and supplies (up to 50 lbs). Required to stand for prolonged periods of time. Required to work in awkward positions and to work with hands above head for prolonged periods of time Required to concentrate for prolonged periods when performing set-up and inspection work.
 
 
 
Working Conditions Work is conducted in University owned and operated buildings, including mechanical rooms and electrical rooms. Work is conducted in a setting with exposure to inclement weather, dust and dirt. Exposure to loud noise from alarms. Required to work independently, in teams, alone and/or in isolated work environments. Required to work at heights including but not limited to a 50-foot lift. Required to operate a motor vehicle or golf cart for transportation on campus. Required to wear personal protective equipment. Supervision May be required to be a day-to-day resource on work procedures to students and casual staff
