Your Opportunity

In this position as an Instrumentation and Controls Designer, you will have the opportunity to work as part of a team of engineers and technologists on multiple projects for a range of public and private sector clients. An Instrumentation and Controls Designer will complete tasks primarily on oil and gas pipeline facility projects. Work performed will be under the general supervision of a Senior Instrumentation and Controls Engineering Technician/Technologist or Engineer.

Your Key Responsibilities

  • Coordinates with other disciplines to ensure compatibility with the design intent
  • Follow industry codes and standards, production guidelines and project standards
  • Performs calculations to analyze and design instrumentation and controls systems
  • Draw on proactive and analytical problem-solving skills to deliver robust designs
  • Support the project team in the selection, evaluation, specification, and engineering of instrumentation and control systems or products including the following within the context of a multidisciplinary design team.

+ Programable Logic Controllers, Distributed Computer Control Systems, and Flow Computers

+ Control and Communication Networks

+ Instruments

+ Control Panel Layouts

+ Wiring and Interconnection Diagrams

+ Instrument Installation Details

+ Control Narratives

+ Shutdown Keys / Cause & Effect Diagrams

+ Instrument Lists / IO Lists

+ Commissioning Guides / Check Sheet

  • Supports client procurement activities and deliverable though development of the following.

+ Material Requisitions

+ Instrument Specifications and Data Sheets

+ Technical Bid Evaluations

+ Vendor Document Reviews

  • Conduct site observation and/or inspection activities during design or construction phases of the project
  • Performs thorough quality control of design documents and provide design ideas and solutions
  • Expected to support team operations and play an integral part in the promotion of our health and safety culture

Qualifications

Your Capabilities and Credentials

  • Ability to work with others on large complex projects or multiple small projects
  • Previous experience in liquids storage terminals, pipeline facilities, and industrial plants
  • Working knowledge of electrical codes and industry standards (ISA, API, NFPA)
  • Experience and knowledge of medium voltage switchgear, soft starters, motor control centers, variable frequency drives, programmable logic controllers (PLCs), distributed control systems, DCS), and networking/communications.
  • Ability to solve problems using sound professional judgment, creativity, and innovation
  • Proficiency in Microsoft (MS) Office Suite and Bluebeam Revu
  • Proficiency using Autodesk AutoCAD software for the development of 2D drawings.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills
  • Able to work under and meet tight deadlines
  • Takes initiative on tasks and in coordinating with other members of the team
  • Recognizes when technical problems are developing and initiates appropriate corrective actions
  • PLC/DCS programming and/or commissioning experience would be an asset.

Education and Experience

Technical degree/diploma/certificate or equivalent in related field; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Minimum of 5-6 years of experience.

Position will primarily work in an office setting; may require some field work.
