Job Description:

Are you an experienced Manager of Corporate Communications who is passionate about telling stories internally and externally, creating engaging employee experiences and working collaboratively with stakeholders to deliver results? In addition to the skills below, we're looking for a passionate team player who is proactive, positive and proven in their ability to roll up their sleeves. This role reports to the Director of Corporate Communications and will have one direct report.

What will you do?

  • Support the strategic priorities for HR including mental health, the future of work, and helping employees manage their overall well-being.
  • Provide internal and external communications counsel for Canadian mental health initiatives to continue building on Sun Life’s reputation as a leader in mental health.
  • Lead the development of internal and external communications to support mental health, the Human Resources Total Rewards team and special projects across HR.
  • Create and execute impactful and strategic communications with a focus on outcomes.
  • Develop creative and innovative ideas when communicating cyclical and complex HR communications that align to HR’s priorities.
  • Provide advice and support in counselling HR Leaders on strategic communications using data-driven insights.
  • Create communications that position Sun Life as a great place to work to attract talent.
  • Fuel employee engagement by delivering simple, creative and visual internal communications tied to HR priorities.
  • Review materials produced by team members for consistency, impact, and accuracy.
  • Manage and coach direct reports to deliver creative communications that keep the employee experience top of mind.
  • Collaborate with the manager supporting Global Talent on communications related to HR and the employee experience to ensure alignment.
  • Collaborate with counterparts in the US and Asia to support global alignment.

What do you need to succeed?

  • Strong storyteller with an understanding of how to create a narrative both internally and externally.
  • Media relations experience related to HR programs and initiatives.
  • Exceptional written communications skills including editing, proofreading and attention to detail.
  • Self-starter with the ability to deliver strategic communications plans, desired outcomes and creative ways of communicating.
  • Experience with employee engagement and organizational change communications.
  • Experience in social media for internal and external audiences to promote HR executives and priorities.
  • Ability to influence and navigate complex stakeholders while keeping the employee experience top of mind.
  • Plan, prioritize and collaborate with others to meet tight deadlines and deliver measurable outcomes based on communications plans.
  • Ability to manage and coach team members to help them grow and develop.
  • Excellent interpersonal, relationship management and project management skills.
  • Strong relationship building skills and ability to maneuver multi-stakeholder teams in a high-volume environment.
  • Strong time management skills, with the ability to balance multiple priorities and produce materials to meet tight deadlines.
  • Team player with a strong focus on trying new approaches and delivering results

What will be nice to have?

  • Post-secondary education in related field (communications, journalism, public relations).
  • Minimum 5-7 years experience in corporate communications with experience both internally and externally.
  • Experience in employee communications and a demonstrated ability to advise senior leaders.
  • Understanding of social media strategy and how to effectively use it as a communication channel.
  • General understanding of the financial services industry.
  • Bilingualism is an asset.
  • Experience in content creation such as videos, images, presentations and GIFs is an asset

The Base Pay range is for the primary location for which the job is posted.  It may vary depending on the work location of the successful candidate or other factors.  In addition to Base Pay, eligible Sun Life employees participate in various incentive plans, payment under which is discretionary and subject to individual and company performance.  Certain sales focused roles have sales incentive plans based on individual or group sales results.
