SUMMARY

The Health Safety and Environment Manager, BGIS Direct Projects will develop, improve and implement health, safety and environmental programs and processes to assist the BGIS Direct Project Team in maintaining compliance while acting as constructor/prime contractor. They will mitigate risk and promote environmental, health and safety compliance, to improve performance on all BGIS Direct Projects.

KEY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Program Development: Create, implement and improve HSE Program Processes, forms and work instructions.
  • Conduct Project inspections to ensure compliance as Constructor/Principal Contractor/Prime Contractor.
  • Develop Project specific HSE risk assessments, mitigation measures and plans for compliance.
  • Evaluation of sub-contractors HSE programs for compliance
  • Project specific internal HSE auditing and site inspection for compliance, report to Senior Management on results
  • Lead Continuous Improvement of the BGIS Direct Project Teams HSE Program by adapting the HSE Program to an efficient electronic environment to support compliance and for ease of use.
  • Direct involvement in the procurement process and development of project specific HSE requirements for sub-contractors.
  • Development and reporting of key safety metrics and related reports
  • Works to ensure compliance with all applicable legislation and fulfillment of contractual environmental, health and safety requirements;
  • Acts as the first point-of-contact for health safety inquiries and incidents (including supporting environmental compliance requirements in working with BIS environment leads);
  • Monitor and enforce adherence to all applicable legislation and internal policies;
  • Support and provide recommendations on HSE matters at all levels in the organization;
  • Manage related internal safety and environmental systems for the company and its clients;
  • Maintain communication with internal and external clients on all health and safety matters
  • Provides council on health and safety matters for Project Managers and Site Supervisors;
  • Manage and implement   training programs for team members;
  • Partner with BGIS Direct leadership in an effort to deliver an environment with the goal of ZERO incidents
  • Support the BGIS Direct General Manager as required in driving Health Safety related reporting/requirements.
  • Leverage existing relationships and develop new professional networks with industry contacts to stay ahead of any industry changes and leverage these contacts to solve BGIS related challenges.

KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS

  • Certification in one or more of the following – Certificate in Occupational Health & Safety, Certificate in Environmental Management through a Community College; or University degree in Industrial Hygiene, Environmental Engineering, Environmental Sciences
  • Five (5 ) to ten (10 )years’ of environmental, health , safety and security work experience
  • Five (5) to ten (10) years’ experience in the construction sector, with HSE responsibilities
  • Strong understanding of environmental, health and safety regulatory requirements as it relates to constructor/principle contractor/prime contractor
  • Project management skills
  • Contractor Management experience: Pre-qualification, orientation, planning and oversight
  • Risk Management and Mitigation Skills
  • Understanding of emergency management requirements
  • Effective training and presentation skills
  • Strong analytical skills
  • Ability to understand complex processes
  • Ability to influence stakeholders and build positive interpersonal relationships
  • Strong administrative skills along with ability to maintain and report accurate data
  • Analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to exercise good judgment
  • Ability to communicate in both official languages preferred
  • Ability to work in a fast pace environment
  • Computer proficiency in MS Office applications in particular – MS Project, MS Excel, MS Outlook, along with ability to quickly learn new applications
  • Experience with HSE automation tools and concepts to create an efficient HSE program imbedded in business tools.

Licenses and/or Professional Accreditation (an asset)

  • Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) from board
  • Project Management Professional (PMP)
  • National Construction Safety Officer (NCSO)
  • COR Auditor
  • Certified Safety Professional (CSP)
  • Certified Health & Safety Consultant from Canadian Society Engineering
