The CHILD Cohort Study (www.childcohort.ca)(CHILD) is a national prospective longitudinal birth cohort study involving over 3,300 Canadian infants and their families. Multiple research programs use the CHILD cohort to explore how genetics and early childhood environmental exposures affect the development of asthma, allergies, and other chronic childhood diseases. The study has recruitment sites in Vancouver, Edmonton, Winnipeg and Toronto, with the National Coordinating Centre (NCC) located at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario.
 
We seek an energetic, creative, and methodologically trained individual to provide leadership for this interdisciplinary and multisite research program as the Director of the CHILD National Coordinating Centre (NCC).
 
Job Summary:
 
The Managing Director is responsible for the ongoing development and quality of the CHILD cohort asset, including collaborating with the participating recruitment centres, data and methodological quality assurance activities, NCC budget and staff management as well as marketing, communications and knowledge dissemination activities.In addition to direct management of the National Coordinating Centre (NCC) and the CHILD cohort asset, the Managing Director develops collaborations and partnerships with research user groups and facilitates research participant & partner engagement to help shape research directions and ensure effective research transfer. They will take on fulfilling all senior level management functions while reporting to the Scientific Study Director and will directly manage a team of approximately 4-6 staff. They will ensure the successful implementation of data collection cycles, overall operations and use of the CHILD research platform and the data collected by all stakeholders, as well as maintaining and supporting its infrastructure and maintaining the platform’s long-term sustainability.
 
Accountabilities:
 
Strategic and Operational Planning: Maintain and improve the management framework for CHILD and execute operational oversight across CHILD’s enabling units: (NCC), CRLB, Data collection centers (DCS), and 4 recruitment and data collection sites (UNIs) Support the strategic development and execution of strategic partnership, fundraising and business development plans for The CHILD cohort study. Develop and execute strategies to ensure that CHILD research platform is used to optimal levels and fulfill its vision and mission. Initiate and engage in partnership development and fundraising activities in collaboration with the remote program sites, research teams and various institutions across the country Write/review/ facilitate team research grant applications, reports, protocols, consent forms and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) Oversee the development of communication plans to promote CHILD to general public and research community and the implementation of various communication strategies including retention and KT strategies. Identify and develop applications for infrastructure and operational funding to support CHILD. Responsible for reporting on CHILD’s activities and progress to the CHILD Directors and Executive Committee, other funding agencies, research ethics boards, and for; demonstrating transparency and accountability of CHILD through ensuring required reporting to all relevant agencies and to other external agencies exceeds expectations for timeliness, clarity, and quality. Oversee the development and maintenance of the overall infrastructure including its IT infrastructure (data management) and services to CHILD’s enabling units. Ensuring the functionality of all Governance Committees as outlined in the governance framework (stake holders, executive committee, scientific committee). Coordinate the activities of advisory boards or steering committees locally, provincially and nationally; deliver presentations to technical and non-technical audiences; coordinate and facilitate workshops and organize strategic planning sessions. Effectively communicate needs and maintain trust relationships with industry partners, knowledge users, research participants, researchers, staff and trainees at various academic institutions nationally and internationally. Liaise with CHILD’s enabling units, responsible investigators, leaders and managers and creating a strong cooperative and supporting work environment. Oversee the data and sample access process, the design of data management systems, evaluates new developments in analytical software; exchange technical information with internal and external colleagues.
 
Staffing:
 
Manage and evaluate the research assistants, the data management team, interim staff and holds accountability for all staff reporting to CHILD’s management team at the NCC. Assign responsibilities, providing guidance to managers. Hold regular management as well as all staff meetings to support the overall vision and mission of the CHILD study. Responsible for orientation and onboarding of scientists, trainees who interact with the CHILD study
 
Fiscal Management:
 
Development, management, and oversight of the CHILD’s budgets. Support the enabling units’ responsible investigators/ Directors/ Manager in budget development, management and control. In Collaboration with the Study Director and McMaster University’s Research Office, develop and oversee funding sub-agreements with all institutions participating in data collection. Provide timely information to the executive committee and other funding partners about the financial progress of the CHILD study through regular report mechanisms in place between McMaster and the study per the financial agreement, using reports checked and prepared by accounting staff. Liaise on financial budget projections and planning in order to sustain the study long-term as per the internal institute agreement which includes assigning budget authority over the entirety of the project.
 
Partnerships/Collaborations:
 
The Managing Director will oversee the establishment of strategic partnerships and communications plans for the CHILD study. Specifically, the Managing Director will develop strategies and engage in building the studies profile with potential partners both in public and private sectors. This will include directing and development of advocacy, partnership, outreach and knowledge translation strategies. The Managing Director will engage in identifying direct or in-kind contributions from partners. The Managing Director will oversee the public relations activity and promotional aspects of the study
 
Qualifications:
 
Education: Doctoral degree in Epidemiology, Physiology or equivalent Ethics certifications: CITI Canada GCP, CITI Canada Privacy, Tri-Council Policy Statement 2
 
Experience: 7-10 years experience, with a minimum of 2  years in a managerial role within a research environment with national scope.
 
Knowledge/Skills:
 
The incumbent will have excellent communications and collaboration skills as well as interpersonal, presentation and facilitation skills and the ability to mobilize teams. The position requires demonstrated excellence in creative problem solving, championing change, driving results, budget development, supervisory experience (preferably in a unionized environment) as well as developing teams and people, and proficiency in the use of electronic communications. This position also requires proven skill in relationship management and achieving results using a collaborative approach as well as experience with infrastructure development. Further, significant related experience in a senior setting with strategic planning, decision making, and financial analysis responsibility is required.
 
This position also will require development of internal relationships within the University to champion the study, manage financials and ensure collaborations between multiple institutions across Canada
 
Required software proficiency MS Office (e.g., Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook), statistical analysis software (e.g., R, SPSS, Stata), citation management software (e.g., EndNote), web conferencing (e.g., Zoom)
 
Assets: Training in GBA+ and Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion principles applied to research is an asset Certified Clinical Research Professional (CCRP) designation Excellent knowledge of project, information, data and sample management systems, databases, word processing and presentation applications Excellent knowledge of the governance, policies, procedures, and protocols of academic institutions Excellent interpersonal, communication (oral and written), facilitation, negotiation, presentation, organizational, conflict management, and problem-solving skills Ability to think strategically and work effectively in a fast-paced environment, exercising mature judgment and a high level of diplomacy, integrity, discretion, and professionalism. Ability to develop relationships and partnerships and to work collaboratively with industry partners and researchers and staff at various academic institutions nationally and internationally Conducting literature searches, critically appraise published research, author/co-author scientific abstracts and manuscripts; create and deliver presentations for national and international audiences; Staying abreast of new developments in statistical analysis techniques; collaborate with database consultants and statisticians Strong ability to initiate, lead and design research programs Strong equity, inclusion and diversity lens Oversight of website and management databases
