SUMMARY

A high-visibility technical advisory and oversight role in building related infrastructure design and construction for a confident manager of people, resources and client expectations. Known for your accomplishments as a Mechanical Engineer, with a background related to the design and construction industry, and your ability to engage with senior executives and build credibility with clients, especially when dealing with multiple project delivery objectives, you bring a breadth of skills, experience and emotional intelligence that inspires excellence and drives quality results. You are an exceptional communicator, able to manage relationships and performance, someone clients know they can count on to put in place the people, resources and processes required not only to deliver on project specifications but to meet their highest expectations.

Reporting to the Senior Manager, Major Capital Projects, and with a background in Mechanical systems, you will be a member of the Major Capital Project national internal Professional Services (iPS) team and provide technical guidance to project management teams across the country. Typically major projects range in size $1 million plus to several hundred million and include renovation projects, installations and/or new construction projects such as major facility renovations and fit ups, consolidations, new builds, to energy retrofits and critical environments.

The nature and diversity of projects carried out by the Major Capital Project group makes this position an exciting opportunity to be involved in different project delivery models, have exposure to a variety of stakeholder interests, deepen your knowledge base and advance your career. You will be part of a Project Management team delivering services that span across all project phases, from workplace planning to pre-construction and design development and management of construction. Our group delivers projects associated with a major program of projects across Canada.

 

KEY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

 

Technical Oversight Support to Project Delivery

 

  • Provide technical support to projects throughout all project delivery phases including planning, design/preconstruction, construction, and closeout;
  • Develop project requirements documentation based upon collaboration through visioning with the client and applying technical requirements related to project goals and overarching client commitments, objectives, standards, and expectations;
  • Conduct research into the feasibility, design, operation and performance of mechanisms, components and systems related to building electrical and mechanical operations, including fire life safety systems;
  • Support the development of investment analysis reports acting as a technical champion, technical advisor, and critical reviewer;
  • Establish and maintain relationships with the client as well as third party Centre of Expertise in the industry, including preparation of Technical Communiques on updates or changes to technical codes and standards with an impact on facility operations and project delivery;
  • Support Project Delivery Services, acting in an owners engineer capacity, during project initiation and planning by reviewing and advising on statement of work, investment analysis reports, schedule, estimates, reports and design documents, from 3rd party consultants, for building mechanical and electrical systems;
  • Plan and oversee the end-to-end delivery of assigned mechanical and electrical project scope (technical advisory and oversight) within a team matrix delivery model. At this level, projects managed are typically of moderate to high complexity, risk and exposure;
  • Conduct research into the feasibility, design, operation and performance of mechanisms, components and systems related to building systems including Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC), building controls, plumbing and life safety systems; and,
  • Work with multi-disciplinary team of facility management professionals and technicians to develop short and long-term capital planning for existing facilities.

 

Knowledge & Skills

 

  • Bachelor’s in Mechanical Engineering or Diploma in Mechanical Engineering Technology with 7+ years of relevant design experience
  • Knowledge of applicable building codes and standards – such as NFCC, NFPA, ASME, API, ANSI, CSA, ASHRAE, Provincial and National Building Codes etc.;
  • Ability to liaison with Authority Having Jurisdictions across Canada;
  • Strong knowledge of HVAC controls sequence of operations considered an asset;
  • Strong communication and organizational skills;
  • Ability to manage competing priorities in fast paced environment;
  • Ability to work on several projects concurrently;
  • Experience working in a multi-disciplinary team environment;
  • Able to monitor costs, including control of project schedules;
  • Maintain effective working relationships with clients, staff, and other employees;
  • Strong organization skills;
  • Prior customer interface experience;
  • Highly meticulous nature, strong attention to detail;
  • Proficient with MS Office suite and with the use of National Master Specifications;
  • Maintain effective working relationships with clients, staff, and other employees;
  • Exceptional analytical and problem solving skills;
  • Strong oral and written communication skills in both official languages preferred;
  • Strong understanding of the engineering environment in mechanical sector;
  • Professional Accreditation;
    • Membership and certification as a Certified Commissioning Professional with the Building Commissioning Association is considered an asset;
    • LEED certified and/or knowledge of sustainable development and energy efficiency principles is considered an asset; and
    • Project Management Institute Accreditation considered an asset.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills in both official languages (French and English) considered an asset; and
  • Other technical training, past commissioning, and field experience will be considered an asset.

 

Licenses and/or Professional Accreditation

  • Member of a registered professional engineering association (with License in good standing), in Canada, or certified Technologist or equivalent considered an asset.
