Job Description:

The Allied Health Department is seeking part-time clinicians for Algonquin College's Dental Programs, for Client Care Clinics.  We are looking for enthusiastic and energetic industry professionals with a passion for education to facilitate learning for a diverse group of students.  The role of the clinician is to provide guidance and supervision to dental hygiene students through demonstration and practice while in the dental clinic. 

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Ensure adherence to current Algonquin College Clinic Asepsis Protocol (CAP) which follow the guiding principles of Infection Prevent and Control (IPAC) practices recommended by Ontario Public Health (see Core and Reprocessing modules);

  • Promote an educational environment that is free from sexual harassment and other forms of discrimination, as dictated by Algonquin College policies;

  • Promote a collaborative, safe and supportive learning environment by working within the Adult Learning model;

  • Model and encourage inclusive practices;

  • Ensure health and safety of the students and the clients in her/his shared care;

  • Act on issues that can adversely affect the health of students, clients, co-workers, family, and communities, as per established AC protocols;

  • Attend clinic prepared to participate fully in the agenda set out by the Course Section Information, along with updates provided by the course supervisor;

  • Competently demonstrate dental hygiene procedures, following the procedures as outlined in the Course Practicum Manual;

  • Participate in ongoing professional learning aimed at expanding competence in her/his area, including group calibration meetings;

  • Attend dental program meetings upon request;

  • Evaluate students’ Dental Hygiene (Levels IV, V, and VI) skills, using outlined criteria and rubrics;

  • Provide written and verbal feedback;

  • Enter grades and detailed feedback comments in the electronic grading system;

  • Provide post-clinic feedback to the clinic for inclusion in the Post-Clinic report;

  • Report any issues that can adversely affect the health of students, clients, co-workers, family and communities;

  • Provide post-clinic feedback to the clinic manager and faculty;

  • Supervise students at an appropriate level and ensure tasks assigned to students are appropriate to their education, experience, skills and confidence and that the student is competent to perform;

  • Provide a safe environment by ensuring effective risk management;

  • Immediately discontinues student activities in which the students’ actions or deficient knowledge, skills or clinical reasoning places the student at risk;

  • Maintain professional accountability for students under their supervision;

Required Qualifications:

  • Minimum three (3) year diploma / degree in Dental Hygiene;

  • Minimum of 5 years recent work experience in a dental practice environment;

  • Registered Dental Hygienist in good standing with CDHO with authorization to self-initiate;

  • HARP Certified;

  • Holds a current certificate in CPR-C/HCP and First Aid;

  • Proof of completion of the Public Health of Ontario IPAC Core Competencies and Reprocessing modules;

  • Training in adult educational theory and methodology preferred;

  • Experience and proficiency with electronic medical record software(s), preferably with Sapphire/ClearDent.

  • Experience with digital x-ray procedures;

  • Highly effective communication, presentation, and organizational skills.

Anticipated Weekly Shifts to be covered (multiple positions):

Each candidate must be available to work a minimum of one of the following weekly shifts to a maximum of 24 hours per week:

  • Mondays 8:00am to 11:00am

  • Mondays 3:00pm to 6:00pm (2 shifts available)

  • Mondays 6:30pm to 9:30pm (2 shifts available)

  • Wednesdays 3:00pm to 6:00pm

  • Wednesdays 6:30pm to 9:30pm

  • Saturdays 8:00am to 11:00pm (Feb 5th to Feb 26th only)
