We are currently seeking a Software Engineering Manager to manage a Digital Software Engineering team of 10 - 20 highly skilled and collaborative individuals across multiple geographies and help drive forward Development practices. This position will report to the Director, Software Engineering on the Digital Solutions team.

What you will do?

  • Manage and develop capabilities of the team through coaching, training, and mentoring
  • Manage progression and professional development of team members to develop both breadth and depth of skills
  • Onboard new team members and ensure they are aware of resources and standards available
  • Evaluate team member performance
  • Define and evolve capability-building roadmap for team members
  • Manage structure and people
  • Resolve organizational issues related to team member workload, including planning and accounting for absences
  • Support HR in seeking and obtaining talent
  • Develop and manage organizational expertise within the Software Engineering discipline
  • Define standards and methodology
  • Serve as a guide for others
  • Drive consistency of the knowledge and skills, sharing best practices and common challenges within the team and across the Software Engineering organization

What you need to succeed:

  • A Post-secondary degree or diploma in Information Technology, Business Administration, or equivalent work experience
  • 5+ years of experience providing direct management of individual contributors
  • Experienced in Talent Management – recruitment and selection, performance management, performance development and coaching, reward and recognition
  • Strong communication skills to teach staff new concepts and techniques and convey to staff decisions about their performance assessment, opportunities, concerns in a professional form
  • Skilled in coaching team members in the areas of performance, standards and work methods
  • Skilled in mediation with the ability to resolve conflicts in the team before they escalate
  • Experience working across organizations and business units
  • Strong understanding of Agile methodologies
  • A previous software development (coding, programming) background at some point in your career.
  • Customer obsession – customers are at the centre of all we do

Preferred skills:

  • Experience as a practitioner on an agile team preferred
  • Role model best practices, mindsets and behaviors with team members and other stakeholders
  • Visible passion for the subject area, participation in domain activities and ability to organize related events
  • Belief in a non-hierarchical culture of interaction, transparency and trust in teams
  • Openness to other people's ideas and a desire to develop them together with the team
  • Ability to create an atmosphere of trust and a comfortable and efficient work environment

The Base Pay range is for the primary location for which the job is posted.  It may vary depending on the work location of the successful candidate or other factors.  In addition to Base Pay, eligible Sun Life employees participate in various incentive plans, payment under which is discretionary and subject to individual and company performance.  Certain sales focused roles have sales incentive plans based on individual or group sales results.
