Job Description:

Reporting to the VP Total Rewards, Enterprise, the AVP, Compensation, along with the VP Total Rewards, Enterprise, is responsible for the design, governance, risk management, communication and administration of executive compensation plans and enterprise-wide incentive plans, aligned with our purpose of helping Clients achieve lifetime financial security and live healthier lives.  The AVP partners with Total Rewards Leaders to execute strategy including using data insights and digital tools to drive an employee-centric approach that is personalized, relevant, holistic and clearly communicated.  

The AVP directly manages a small team of compensation professionals and develops and implements innovative, business-oriented solutions with measurable outcomes that optimize our financial investment and deliver a compelling Employee experience at moments that matter. In this role you will have to stay current in external trends, including technology and analytics/ measurement advances and industry trends and provide strong leadership, coaching and development to direct reports (the executive compensation team, and possibly others), who work from both Toronto and Waterloo.

What will you do:

  • Directly lead and develop a team of compensation professionals and provide broad people and functional leadership within the Total Rewards, Enterprise team.
  • Manage the design, communication and administration of executive and enterprise-wide incentive programs, while not exposing the company to excessive risk, including the Annual Incentive Plan (AIP), and long-term incentive programs (share units, options). 
  • Use data analytics to generate fact-based insights that drive the Business, Total Rewards and compensation strategic agenda.
  • Prepare recommendations and materials for the Management Resources Committee (MRC) of the Board of Directors.
  • Maintain compensation governance and alignment with risk management policies and standards, including managing the Compensation & Appointment Policy, and monitor the alignment of compensation programs with external stakeholder/shareholder governance principles and best practices.
  • Prepare annual proxy disclosure, financial statement disclosure and supporting materials for the Annual General Meeting (AGM).
  • Manage administration of all LTI programs, including vendor relationship with Shareworks by Morgan Stanley.
  • May lead compensation analysis related to mergers, acquisitions and divestitures.

Qualifications

  • Over 12 years of compensation experience including plan design, management, and communication, preparation of Board-ready materials and proxy disclosure, and risk management and governance of compensation programs.  M&A experience is an asset.
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience required in Business, Human Resources or a related field.  MBA or CFA is an asset.
  • Strong business acumen, Client focus, and knowledge of compensation design.
  • Strong financial and quantitative skills and ability to use data analysis to generate insights and support fact-based decision making.
  • Ability to partner across HR and with Business Leaders, navigate a matrix organization, build relationships, collaborate, explain compensation concepts in a simple and concise way, and influence outcomes.
  • Strong consulting skills, solutions orientation, and ability to innovate.
  • Ability to deal with ambiguity, develop a course of action, execute and drive results.
  • Strong project management and change management skills.  Knowledge of agile methodologies is an asset.

The Base Pay range is for the primary location for which the job is posted.  It may vary depending on the work location of the successful candidate or other factors.  In addition to Base Pay, eligible Sun Life employees participate in various incentive plans, payment under which is discretionary and subject to individual and company performance.  Certain sales focused roles have sales incentive plans based on individual or group sales results.
