Position purpose:
Reporting to the Manger, Communication, the Communication Officer and Writer develops communication strategies, making use of both traditional and digital communication tools, which aim at two objectives: to recruit the best students in the national markets and in all curricula of the University of Ottawa at all study cycles and, support the retention and experience of students in the current University community. Conceptualizes and ensures the implementation of communication plans, including the drafting and revision of the content, in order to project a positive image of the University and promote the brand.

In this role, your responsibilities will include:

  • Design and develop communication strategies to promote the study programs and services offered by the University of Ottawa, and thus contribute to the recruitment, admission, retention and graduation of students from national and international markets at all study cycles.
  • Develop an in-depth understanding of the communication needs of business partners in order to suggest communication initiatives.
  • Design and ensure the implementation of communication plans related to strategic orientations and targeting various audiences, both internally and externally.
  • Perform cost-benefit analyses, manage allocated budgets, timelines and resources for all communication projects under your responsibility in order to ensure their success, from ideation to post-production.

Essential Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of the principles of marketing and communication normally acquired by means of a university degree in a related discipline or equivalent combination of studies and work experience.
  • At least three years of demonstrated experience in a similar role.
  • Experience in developing and implementing communication plans.
  • Knowledge of best practices in digital and traditional communication with diverse audiences.
  • Experience in the production of digital promotional material (video, photo, animation) and printed materials (brochure, poster, advertising).
  • Experience in the design and use of performance indicators used in the preparation and evaluation of communications plans.
  • Superior expertise in writing in both official languages for promotional purposes and reporting.
  • Ability to manage several complex projects with tight timelines in a constantly evolving environment.
  • In-depth knowledge of the tools normally used in communication including digital publishing platforms (Drupal an asset), customer relationship management (CRM) tools, social media management, spreadsheets, databases and evaluation tools (E.g. Analytics, survey monkey).
  • In-dept knowledge of web sites creation and web publishing (Drupal essential and html coding an asset)
  • Ability to conduct brainstorming sessions and to present results in a variety of contexts.
  • Creativity and attention to detail.
  • Bilingualism – French and English (oral and written expression).
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including evening and weekend.
  • Ability to participate in events held outside the city.

Bilingualism: French and English (spoken and written); to be considered for this position, candidates must be rated at the Low Advanced proficiency level or higher for both oral comprehension and reading comprehension in their second official language. The rating is determined by a proficiency test designed by the Official Languages and Bilingualism Institute.
