General Accountability

Provides technical support and expertise to those involved in the procurement, inspections, diagnoses, repairs, maintenance, overhaul, rebuilding, designing, improving and supporting of all operating systems associated with their specific area; ensuring requirements and standards are met; conducts operational tests, quality inspections, technical problem solving, equipment performance reviews, quality assurance activities, work method development and database administration; creates, revises and administers technical documentation; works at other sites, both indoors and outdoors and is in involved in training initiatives.
 

Key Job Functions

  • Diagnose, correct and eliminate non-routine complex failures on area specific systems; investigate and correct unusual, difficult or repeating problems on equipment; correct deficiencies with work methods, job plans, procedures, modifications etc.
  • Diagnose and coordinate repairs on equipment, systems or structures; ensure stabilization of failures and determines the cause; ensure compliance with relevant regulations and standards; suggest solutions or modifications; provide direction as required.
  • Plan, perform and coordinate preventative maintenance checks and services on equipment, systems, and structures, and ensure techniques have been applied according to written procedures, standards and best practices.
  • Ensure equipment, systems or structures are fully operational by coordinating and/or performing relevant checks, and other relevant inspections; develop and/or modify tests under direction, ensure compliance with relevant regulations and standards.
  • Provide technical guidance and advice on selection and purchase of equipment, systems or structures, service requirements, specialized training requirements, safety issues and incidents, and other issues related to area of specialty.
  • Prepare various written reports, test reports, modification instructions, repair and diagnosis techniques, and analyses (e.g., cost, life cycle, commonality) as well as general, technical and occasionally budgetary correspondence related to assignments.
  • Support administration of design review process.
  • Research, develop, produce and deliver suitable training programs for employees on departmental Standard Operating Procedures and other assigned topics; prepare training materials, documents and records.
  • Perform a variety of administrative and supervisory duties, as required (e.g., planning, organizing, assigning tasks, scheduling, interviewing).

Education and Experience

  • Completion of a post secondary college diploma or university degree in a related discipline or a combination of education, training and experience deemed to be equivalent.
  • OACETT certification as an Engineering Technologist is considered an asset.
  • Possession of a valid Truck & Coach Technician Certificate (310-T) is considered an asset.

Additional Requirements

  • Sound knowledge of automotive engineering design principles and maintenance practices utilized in modern vehicles and transit fleets.
  • Detailed knowledge in installed accessory transit bus systems such as destination signage, surveillance cameras, stop announcement systems, passenger counting systems, communication systems, GPS systems and wireless data transfer systems, as well as knowledge in transit bus control systems, electrical, electronic, pneumatic, mechanical and air conditioning systems, door systems and hybrid electric propulsion systems.
  • Knowledgeable of the concepts and practices of vehicle and component testing programs and procedures.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of the latest diagnostic technologies and be able to diagnose and correct failures in any systems and components utilized on automotive powered transit vehicles, trucks, automobiles and related shop equipment.
  • Must have a valid, non-probationary, Province of Ontario, class "G" driver's license and will be required to use own vehicle in order to travel to various work locations or attend meetings with suppliers, etc. May be required to upgrade to a "CZ" driver's license.
  • The successful candidate may be required to attend and successfully complete training programs for Direct Current Fundamentals, Automotive Circuits and/or obtain alternate fuel system technology licenses.
