In this role, you will provide process engineering support to operations and other technical staff within our Upgrading team.

You will use your expertise to:

  • Evaluate opportunities for the improvement, availability, and utilization
  • Develop process engineering studies to address existing plant bottlenecks, risk mitigation, or to improve performance
  • Provide technical support to investigations, performance optimization and process improvement initiatives
  • Carryout process engineering evaluations on distillation towers, pumps, heat exchangers, relief devices, control valves and other process equipment
  • Help resolve operating plant issues
  • Provide process engineering input into the successful execution of capital projects
  • Ensure process designs minimize hazards, achieve the desired intent, minimize costs, and adhere to relevant internal and external industry standards
  • Facilitate effective communication, collaboration, and transfer of information within a cross-functional team, broader projects team, and across the company
  • Determine engineering scopes and test plans related to sustaining projects
  • Coach and mentor junior team members

Must-haves (minimum requirements):

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering
  • Registration or eligibility for registration as a Professional Engineer or Engineer-in-Training with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA)
  • An agile work style with an ability to handle multiple priorities, challenging demands and function in a positive but dynamic work environment
  • Strong non-authoritative leadership and planning skills
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills
  • A valid driver’s licence and a clean driving record

Preference for:

  • At least two years of relevant engineering experience
  • Specific experience working in a Refinery or Upgrader is considered an asset
  • Experience in an operating environment
  • Proven proficiency with analytics, such as process plant data trending/data analysis tools and Microsoft Office programs (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) 
  • Demonstrable knowledge in preparing and effectively communicating engineering concepts to drive decisions to resolution
  • An understanding of complex processes and a strong initiative to develop and implement creative process enhancements/scope minimization
  • A continuous improvement mindset and the ability to seek greater knowledge and understanding of the systems, processes, and hazards in the workplace

Where you’ll be working, your work schedule, and other important information:

  • You will work out of our Base Plant site in Fort McMurray, Alberta
  • Hours of work are a regular 40-hour workweek, Monday to Friday
  • This position is safety-sensitive
  • If you reside outside of Fort McMurray, relocation of your primary residence to within 60 km of Fort McMurray is mandatory. Relocation support will be provided; we offer competitive housing assistance to eligible individuals
