General Accountability 

 

Assists with the leadership of the section, and supervises day-to-day activities related to the inspection, installation, maintenance, testing, diagnosis and repair of critical and non-critical overhead electrical wiring and infrastructure.  Areas of focus will be on processes, procedures, equipment, tooling, Overhead Lineperson Apprenticeship review, project planning and quality control.  Also involves project management activities, administrative duties, program development, ensuring employees are properly trained, along with other responsibilities as necessary. 

 

Key Job Functions

 

  • Assist with the daily activities and monitoring of the Overhead Section, including capital, maintenance, and repair initiatives and activities.
  • Develop short and long term plans, determine priorities and coordinate work programs to ensure adequate corrective and preventative maintenance programs.
  • Direct emergency responses to trolley wire damage and overhead pole replacement to ensure uninterrupted or minimal delays to streetcar service.
  • Develop the section’s capital and operating budgets, including related material and workforce requirements.
  • Develop project and maintenance specific reports, delegate assignments, and review work results.
  • Supervise staff and unionized employees as required to meet the operational needs of the section, and develop and enhance weekly, monthly and annual schedules.
  • Evaluate the performance of employees, including counselling and commending employees, as well as making recommendations for training, personal development, promotions, etc.
  • Review and development of an enhanced Overhead Lineperson apprenticeship program.
  • Review and develop safety standards surrounding job safety briefings, safety meeting topics and chairing various management-union meetings, and oversee the resolution of open safety items and concerns.
  • Promote a respectful work and service environment that supports diversity, inclusion, and is free from harassment and discrimination. Education and Experience 

 

Completion of a post-secondary college diploma or university degree in a related discipline or a combination of education, training and experience deemed to be equivalent.
Several years of directly related work experience.

 

Additional Requirements 

 

  • Sound knowledge of electrical/electronic principles as well as installation, inspection, maintenance, testing and repair, of electrical equipment such as traction power lines, feeder cables, computer controlled 600-volt electrical track switches, span wires, transformers and associated fittings, fixtures and infrastructure as they relate to the electrical systems utilized in the TTC's overhead power distribution network.
  • Sound working knowledge of the co-ordination and installation principles and practices of capital construction/installation projects.
  • Sound knowledge of human relations concepts/practices; understanding of pertinent human resources policies and legislation/regulations, including safety, union agreements, human rights, etc.
  • Familiar with CSA and ISO 9000 quality standards, M.E.A. regulations, traffic laws and City of Toronto by-laws.
  • Knowledge of quality control, project planning/management concepts and financial reporting.
  • Effective communication skills both verbally and written.
  • Excellent supervisory, administrative, organizational and interpersonal skills; demonstrated ability to maintain close working relationship with section staff, unionized employees, various staff in other departments, Union representatives, contractors, suppliers, municipal agencies and the public.
  • Ability to motivate subordinates and effectively plan, supervise and co-ordinate the activities of others to accomplish objectives
  • Proven track record of delivering tasks and results associated with maintenance and capital projects.
  • Must have a valid Province of Ontario Class “G” driver’s licence and may be required to upgrade to a class “DZ” licence; may be required to use a personal vehicle when inspecting work locations.
