Your Opportunity
Stantec has an opportunity for an Intermediate Aquatic Resources Biologist to join our aquatics team. The position will ideally be located in Sidney or Burnaby, British Columbia. However, there is flexibility to work from our other offices in British Columbia, including Terrace and Kelowna.
The ideal candidate has experience developing and implementing baseline and long-term monitoring field programs for water quality, sediment, and benthic invertebrates, analyzing and summarizing lab data, and assessing predictive modeling results. The ideal candidate can use that experience and an understanding of provincial and federal regulations to assess potential impacts. Experience should include environmental assessment, permitting, and monitoring for a variety of projects and sectors, particularly mining. Experience with effluent or wastewater discharge permitting is an asset. Experience with environmental effects monitoring under MDMER is an asset.
As an Intermediate Aquatic Resources Biologist you will work on discipline-specific projects and as part of multi-disciplinary teams on varied projects across Canada. You will work under general supervision and exercise independent judgement to analyze issues, interpret information, and recommend solutions within standard practice areas. On more complex projects, you will work closely with a senior water quality biologist, contributing to project efficiencies and process improvements.
Work may include sampling in urban and remote locations, water quality, aquatic resources, and ecotoxicology environmental effects assessments (i.e., provincial and federal environmental assessments), technical assessment reports, permit applications, and environmental effects monitoring in both freshwater and marine environments. Reporting is a large component of this position and strong analytical and technical writing skills are an asset. Familiarity with R for data management and statistical analysis is a preferred skill.
As an Intermediate Aquatic Resources Biologist, you will work with multi-disciplinary teams that include geochemists, hydrologists, and marine and freshwater ecologists to find solutions to complex water quality problems. Experience in:
Education and Experience
A Bachelor’s degree in one of the relevant environmental sciences (e.g., toxicology, biology, chemistry) and a minimum of six years of work experience or a Master’s degree and a minimum of four years of work experience.
Registration, or ability to register within one year, with the British Columbia College of Applied Biology (RPBio or RBTech, or BIT or RBTech in Training) is required. Professional designations from other organizations with reciprocal agreements with BC are also acceptable (e.g., P.Biol from Alberta).
The successful candidate will be required to primarily work in a typical office environment working with computers and remaining sedentary for long periods of time, as well as complete field programs to collect water quality data and samples. Stantec offers a flexible work arrangement for desk-based tasks, combining home-based and/or office-based time. Field work will include exposure to the elements, including inclement weather, navigation through rough terrain, and requirements to lift items and equipment up to 50 lbs.
