Job Description:

You would lead our Sponsored Markets Disability Claims team to deliver superior business results, supporting our Association & Affinity and Creditor clients.   In return, we will actively support you by offering a healthy and dynamic workplace along with challenging and rewarding work!

The Association and Affinity claims team is responsible for the adjudication and management of disability claims.  The Creditor team is accountable for disability claims including mortgage disability, line of credit, critical illness and job loss claims for both large and small financial institutions.

As Director, Group Disability Sponsored Markets you are accountable for the overall direction, employee engagement, change leadership, business and team performance, quality of work, staffing, continuous improvement, and management of all aspects of the team.  This role is part of the broader Central Region Disability Leadership team.  As such, you will contribute to the overall leadership of the Central region for Group Disability, in partnership with our Group Benefits Business Development colleagues.

Reporting to the AVP, Group Disability, Central Region, this role requires a strong subject-matter expert in group insurance and in disability management with an outcome focused orientation, as well as considerable change, business and people leadership acumen.  

What will you do?

  • Lead the Sponsored Markets A&A and Creditor claims teams with contribution to the development and realization of strategic objectives for Sponsored Markets / Group Benefits.

  • Engage employees to clearly understand goals in alignment with Group Benefits / Sponsored Markets objectives and motivate the team through your two leaders to drive for and achieve positive results.

  • Maintain a positive, psychologically healthy and safe work environment that supports retention of highly engaged employees.

  • Cultivate positive relationships with Business Development to deliver an exceptional client experience; grow your block of business by effectively managing existing client relationships to retain existing clients, and participate in finalist presentations and other business development activities to attract new business.

  • Build strong relationships with clients and find innovative solutions to improve our service offering, increase Voice of the Client results, and resolve escalations effectively.

  • Own risks associated within scope of responsibility and develop, implement, maintain and monitor sufficient internal controls.

  • Oversee completion of all Sun Life risk and compliance requirements related to Sponsored Markets within Group Disability (e.g. Internal and External Audits relating to processes, Business Continuity risk management, etc.). 

What do you need to succeed?

  • Minimum of 5 years senior leadership experience, leading operational teams and leading and developing leaders

  • Solid understanding of the Disability Management profession; with direct experience leading Disability Claims teams

  • Demonstrated knowledge with experience in the Group Benefits business, ideally with experience in Critical Illness and Creditor products, in addition to Disability

  • Oriented to drive for results and achieve goals

  • Excellent communication, influencing, negotiation skills and proven change leadership experience

  • Group facilitation skills, with the ability to easily engage employees and clients

  • Ability to analyze and synthesize complex issues for problem resolution, leveraging data

  • Effective team player within leadership team structure

  • Proven experience in developing and maintaining strong client relationships

  • Skilled in Microsoft Office suite of products (PowerPoint, Excel, Word)

  • Aspiration and ability for increasing senior leadership roles combined with emotional intelligence and a habit of making a positive difference in the lives of those around you.

Education and Experience:  

  • University degree in Occupational Health, Disability Management, Business Administration, Health Administration or relevant discipline

  • Minimum of 5 years of senior leadership experience

The Base Pay range is for the primary location for which the job is posted.  It may vary depending on the work location of the successful candidate or other factors.  In addition to Base Pay, eligible Sun Life employees participate in various incentive plans, payment under which is discretionary and subject to individual and company performance.  Certain sales focused roles have sales incentive plans based on individual or group sales results.
