Health Physics Specialist: Job Description
 
1. General Description
 
The Health Physics Specialist is a temporary role in the Health Physics Department intended toprovide additional effort and support to the University’s radiation safety program at times ofexceptionally high demand or in response to extended leaves of absence by Health Physicists.
 
In general, the roll of the Health Physics Specialist is to support the Health Physicists andSenior HealthPhysicist in fulfilling their designated responsibilities under the radiation safety program.
 
2. Roles & Responsibilities
 
Under the supervision of a Health Physicist and/or the Senior Health Physicist, the Health PhysicsSpecialist will perform duties including:
 
•   Collecting, processing and analysing data related to the radiation safety program and assistingin the preparation of reports.•   Reviewing proposed work, performing radiological safety assessments of proposed work andpreparing workplans and permits for authorized radiological work.•   Planning, conducting, reporting and assessing radiological surveys and measurements.•   Operating, calibrating and maintaining radiological survey and measuring equipment.•   Participating in emergency preparedness and response roles of the Health Physics Department,including the response to declared radiological incidents and nuclear emergencies.•   Representing the Health Physics Department in meetings and interactions with other Universityemployees and students and with agencies outside of the University such as regulatory agencies.•   Assisting in the development and delivery of radiation safety training.•   Assist in developing policies and procedures and new tools and techniques to facilitate thework of theDepartment.3. Supervision
 
This position has no supervisory responsibilities.The Health Physics Specialist will be expected to provide guidance, technical support and taskleadership forHealth Physics Department technical and student personnel from time to time.
 
4. QualificationsEducation:MSc. In Health Physics.Candidates with an Honours BSc. in Health Physics, Medical Physics or a closely related field withdemonstrated competencies and at least six months of relevant experience in radiationsafety may be considered.
