Your Opportunity

As a Junior Mechanical Engineer your role is to work with direct supervision and general direction on tasks and smaller projects, and as a team member of a larger project under the guidance of a senior engineer. While Oil & Gas is still a mainstay of our work, our largest project inhouse at the moment is a renewable energy facility. You will have the opportunity join our established project team and gain direct experience in the expanding renewable energy sector, while also continuing to work on Oil & Gas projects. You will participate in the evaluation, recommendation, and specification for engineered systems or products for a project verifying compliance with applicable codes and engineering standards/practices.

Your Key Responsibilities

  • Supports project team in development of design documentation, plans and reports for relevant project design elements.
  • Coordinates with other disciplines (instrumentation, electrical, structural, electrical, civil, etc.) to ensure compatibility with the design intent.
  • Prepare mechanical equipment specifications, datasheets and procurement support documents.
  • Execute technical bid evaluations (TBE’s) for equipment.
  • Assists in the review of vendor drawings and submittals, responds to requests for information
  • Assists in the preparation and coordination of the project specifications and related documents.
  • Complete required mechanical calculations for equipment sizing, material selection, etc. using appropriate engineering methodology and principles.
  • Assist in development of Construction Work Packages (CWP’s).
  • Assist with the development of mechanical drawings (isometrics, orthos, and occasionally P&ID's).
  • Assist in development of tie-in lists and line lists.
  • Ability to participate in site visits and field engineering work.
  • Work as a contributing team member within a multi-discipline team.
  • Understand and work within Stantec's quality control guidelines.
  • Comply with Stantec's EH&S program, with a focus on safety in the field. Ensure all work is completed with safety of paramount concern.
  • Execute mechanical engineering deliverables on multiple projects in a dynamic work environment.
  • Appropriate application of codes and standards (both legislated and client-specific).

Qualifications

Your Capabilities and Credentials

  • Familiarity with industry standards and applicable ASME, CSA, API, ANSI, NACE codes and standards.
  • Intermediate knowledge and application of mechanical codes and standards.
  • Intermediate knowledge of mechanical systems, means and methods, materials, and industry standards.
  • Intermediate understanding of all phases of engineering document production and the relationship between drawings and specifications.
  • Recognizes when technical problems are developing and initiates appropriate corrective actions.
  • Ability to check own work for accuracy and completeness and manage time to meet project budget and schedule.
  • Ability to participate and collaborate in project team setting and to engage in creative and critical thought.
  • Understanding of mechanical engineering concepts and ability to effectively communicate ideas to others.
  • Field experience is considered an asset.
  • EPCM or shop fabrication experience is considered an asset.
  • Sound technical skills, with focus on accurate design calculations and analysis.
  • Strong desire to learn and work in a team environment.
  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills.
  • Willingness to work on multiple jobs/projects at a time.
  • Proven problem solving skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Ability to perform in a dynamic and fast-paced environment.
  • Willingness to go the ‘extra mile’ to support projects, clients, and fellow employees.
  • Knowledge of and ability to use standard computer applications.

Education and Experience

Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering.

EIT status with APEGA or Licensed Professional Engineer.

Minimum of 3-4 years of related work experience.

Typical office environment working with computers and remaining sedentary for long periods of time. Field work may include exposure to the elements including inclement weather.
