We are hiring one (1) Full Time, Permanent Litigation & Reporting Specialist in Edmonton, AB!

 

The Litigation & Reporting Specialist is accountable for providing litigation support to EPCOR’s Legal Services Team, as well as providing administrative support as required, managing Access to Information Requests with support from the Privacy Officer, and Ethics and Respectful Workplace reporting.

This includes providing prompt and effective support to the litigation lawyers, as well as preparing litigation-related reports and assisting the Legal Team's insurance claims coordinator as needed. This role is also responsible for preparing Ethics and Respectful Workplace reports, as well as ensuring that Access to Information Requests are properly documented and addressed in a timely way, and responded to in compliance with policy and legal requirements.

What you’d be responsible for

Reporting to and working with Senior Legal Counsel, this position is accountable for, but not limited to:

 

  • Ensure the efficient, timely and effective management of litigation matters including:
    • Researching and investigating facts and records relevant to insurance claims and litigation events in collaboration with litigation lawyers and impacted business units
    • Drafting and revising legal documents and correspondence
    • Playing a leading role in gathering and retaining relevant documents and preparation of summary witness statements
    • Making arrangements for the questioning of witnesses
    • Attending litigation meetings to support internal and/or external counsel
    • Performing legal research and preparing draft opinions
    • Maintaining and managing limitation dates
    • Diarizing litigation files and following up as required
    • Delivering on the Legal Department’s litigation reporting requirements
    • Preparing settlement documents and releases
    • Managing the legal precedent database
    • Providing administrative support, as required, to litigation lawyers
    • Preparing yearly external legal retainer letters and audit inquiry letters
    • Managing and coordinating payment of settlement funds
    • Opening litigation files and associated purchase orders
    • Managing collection activities on a select number of files including:
      • Drafting demand letters
      • Investigating collection matters with the assistance of the business unit
      • Conducting litigation, corporate, PPR or other relevant searches and identifying ways to collect outstanding amounts
      • Maintaining and managing limitation dates
      • Taking necessary steps to ensure successful collection of amounts owed

 

  • Managing and responding to requests received through EPCOR’s Access to Information Program (ATIP):
    • Acting as the initial primary contact for all ATIP inquiries/requests
    • Monitoring and reviewing ATIP requests
    • Tracking ATIP requests in a database and ensuring timelines have been met
    • Working with business units, legal counsel or adjustor to gather relevant documentation/information regarding ATIP requests
    • Responding to ATIP requests in accordance with program and legal requirements.

 

  • Other related responsibilities:
    • Assisting in resolving complex claims for damages and working as back up to the claims coordinator, as required, for insurance claims handled by EPCOR’s independent claims adjustor.
    • Working with the Human Resources and Ethics Officer to prepare reports related to investigations arising from Ethics and Respectful Workplace internal investigations.

What’s required to be successful

The successful candidate will possess the following qualifications, experience and behaviors:

 

  • Minimum of 5 years experience with litigation, claims management and/or privacy
  • Legal Assistant/Paralegal diploma, or related diploma is an asset
  • Superior organizational skills and attention to detail including strong data processing and proof reading skills
  • Flexibility to work with changing priorities and commitment to discretion in relation to confidential information
  • Willingness to learn about and become a key asset to EPCOR’s Access to Information Program (experience in privacy matters will be considered an asset)

 

To be successful in this role, you have meticulous work habits, exceptional proof reading skills, the ability to organize and keep track of vast amounts of information, and a keen eye for detail. In addition, you should demonstrate the ability to conduct legal research and investigations relevant to insurance claims and litigation events. Effective Litigation & Reporting Specialists are good communicators, well-versed in interview and investigation techniques and possess the ability to write about legal matters in a clear and concise way.
